3 essential steps to enjoy the ride on a bike
Getting around the city by bike is an ideal way to combine exercise, sustainability and fun. And to enjoy the journey, safety is a key element, so we share with you some simple steps to make your experience hassle-free.
1. Prepare before riding
We recommend that you consider these tips on each of your trips:
- Wear a helmet: Although it is not mandatory, wearing one is always a good idea. Regardless of your route, safety never hurts.
- Wear a reflective vest or clothing: Especially when riding at night or in low visibility conditions, a reflective vest will help you be more visible to other vehicles on the road.
- Check your bike: Always make sure that the lights, brakes, tires, and bell are working properly. With ECOBICI, take advantage of the first 2 minutes to do this check. If something is not right, return the bike, report it, and take another one.
2. Know and respect the rules of the road
A bicycle is a vehicle and as a cyclist, it is your responsibility to know and respect the traffic rules. This includes following road signs, yielding when necessary, and not riding in spaces reserved for pedestrians. For more information, we suggest you consult the Mexico City Cyclist Guide.

3. Be kind to everyone
When riding in the city you are sharing public space, everyone is looking to get to their destination safely, so courtesy is key on the road:
- Respect the space of others: Whenever possible, use the bike lanes, otherwise you can position yourself in the center of a full lane, but do not invade pedestrian zones or lanes exclusive to other vehicles.
- Use your bell politely: If you need to pass or announce your presence, use the bell respectfully.
- Be patient and give way: Do not rush at intersections and give way to pedestrians, remember that they have priority and that at some point you are also a pedestrian.
With these basics, your cycling experience will be much safer and more enjoyable. Share them with your friends and let’s contribute together to a safer city where we can continue enjoying the road.
